Everyone knew Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting would be the last for board member Kathy Berezny, who chose not to run for a fourth three-year term this year. But no one realized it would also be the last meeting for her colleague Angela DeVito.

Near the end of the meeting, after many good-bye tributes and presentations of flowers and proclamations to Berezny, DeVito abruptly announced her intended resignation.

“This has been a busy and difficult year,” DeVito said. “At the close of business June 30, I will be tendering my resignation from the Riverhead Board of Education,” she said.

Board members, including board president Ann Cotten-DeGrasse, sat for a moment in stunned silence.

“Wow, that comes as a shock,” Cotten-DeGrasse said.

DeVito didn’t say anything further publicly and after the meeting declined comment. She left the high school at the conclusion of the public portion of the meeting, as the rest of the board members returned to executive session.

DeVito was elected to the school board in 2003, the year after Berezny was first elected, and is its immediate past president.

Cotten-DeGrasse said the board could appoint someone to fill her seat until the next election, in May 2012, when DeVito’s current term would have been up.
