Sonya Mebus of Southold died suddenly Jan. 24, 2012 in Florida. She was 68 years old.

She was born in Queens on Sept. 9, 1943, the daughter of Helen (Kap) and Richard Hofmann. She attended New York City public schools, graduating from Jamaica High School, and then St. John’s University.

She married Stanford Mebus on Aug. 2, 1990. She worked as an administrative assistant at her husband’s company, Stanford A. Mebus & Co. in Huntington.

Mebus was a summer and weekend resident of the North Fork for 25 years, with homes in Jamesport and Southold, before moving to Southold full-time five years ago.

In addition to her husband; Mebus is survived by her children Ted Plihcik, of Aquebogue, Sonya Sulton, of Smithtown, and Pamela Cuffaro of Jupiter, Fla.; by her brothers Richard Hofmann, of Toms River, N.J., and Bruno Hofmann of Fresh Meadows; and by 17 grandchildren.

“Every single one of them was the light of her life,” Cuffaro said of her mother’s love for her grandchildren. “She loved them so much.”

Viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home, 406 East Main St., Riverhead. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, 52125 Route 25, Southold. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, 4017 Main Bayview Rd, Southold.
