Mattituck man seriously injured in single-car crash

A 29-year-old Mattituck man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center early Friday morning following a single-car crash on Sound Avenue at about 2 a.m., according to Riverhead Town Police.

A 2001 Chevrolet operated by Jared Smith swerved off the road and struck a tree on Sound Avenue and Church Lane in Aquebogue, Riverhead police said. 

Smith was transported to to Stony Brook University Medical Center by Suffolk County Police helicopter. 

He suffered serious injuries in the accident, including significant head trauma, according to Riverhead Police Det. David Freeborn. 

No further information about his condition was immediately available from the hospital.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.
