(Updated: Sunday 8:14a.m.) Riverhead Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as Rodolfo Paredes, 19, of Calverton. He is listed in fair condition Sunday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The driver in a single-car crash on Route 25 in Calverton was arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to Stony Brook Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, according to Riverhead Town Police.

The driver was extracted from his vehicle by Wading River Fire Department, which had to remove the roof of the vehicle to free its occupant. Police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The car, a Nissan Altima, was westbound on Route 25 when, according to witnesses, it swerved off the road and struck a tree in front of the Calverton Commons shopping plaza, west of Fresh Pond Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Empty beer cans were visible in and near the car at the accident scene.

Police have not yet released the identity of the driver.

Route 25 was closed to traffic until about 6 p.m., while police investigated the scene.
