A Riverhead couple was arrested Monday night on charges of possession of an assault weapon and endangering the welfare of a child following a brawl outside 821 East Main Street.
Riverhead Town Police said they responded to a report of a large fight outside the H building at the River Pointe apartment complex across the street from town hall at about 6:15 p.m. Police said they “encountered a large crowd and received several reports of a subject in possession of a gun.”
Police said they identified a suspect upon conducting several interviews and during a search of the suspect’s apartment, found a loaded Intratec (Tec-9) 9mm assault weapon hidden inside a bathroom.
Police arrested both residents of the apartment, Shorne T. Brown, 34, and Deja S. Daniels, 31.
Brown was charged with: criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a Class C felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony; menacing, and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the police report.
Daniels was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
Both Brown and Daniels were taken to Riverhead Police Headquarters, where they were processed and held for arraignment.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
