It’s a big day for football in Riverhead today.

The undefeated Monarchs (3-0) host Greenport/Southold/Mattituck (0-3) today for their homecoming game at McGann-Mercy High School.

Coming into Week Four, the Monarchs were locked in a four-way tie with Hampton Bays, Babylon and Mount Sinai at the top of Division IV. Hampton Bays blanked Southampton last night 34-0, improving to 4-0. Babylon visits Mount Sinai this afternoon.

Across town at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field on Osborn Avenue, the Riverhead Blue Waves (2-1) host the Half Hollow Hills West Colts.

The Colts (0-3) are hoping for their first win this year, on their return to the scene of one of the most exciting games of the 2011 season: a 43-42 Blue Wave victory at the buzzer, with Charles Bartlett diving into the end zone for the TD on a snap with :00 left on the clock. Riverhead’s Sept. 24, 2011 homecoming game won’t soon be forgotten by Blue Waves football fans, and you can be sure the Colts — who, it happens, lost another one-point heartbreaker to West Babylon last week, 29-28 — will come galloping into town looking for a litte sweet revenge this afternoon.

The weather forecast calls for clearing skies and some sunshine this afternoon, with highs in the mid-60s. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. for both football games today.

RiverheadLOCAL will be covering both games today. Check back here later for results, photos, video and recaps.
