Riverhead High School senior Edgar Samudio and junior Juliana Mora represented Riverhead High School at the annual Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican / Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute in Albany, NY on March 23-25.
Over the course of three days they participated in a variety of team building activities and workshops with 200 other outstanding Hispanic students from across New York State. Students made appointments to interview their local assemblyman before attending.
The institute culminated with a mock assembly where the students sat in the seat of their assemblyman and argued for or against a number of actual bills that are making their way through the assembly based on their representative’s viewpoint.
Samudio won a $500 scholarship, was nominated as “Outstanding Student Delegate” from Suffolk County and was chosen to attend the SOMOS NY Gala, where Senator Kirsten Gillibrand gave the key-note speech.
“Both students said the institute was an amazing experience,” said chaperone and ESL teacher Claudette Garley-Rottkamp. “I was incredibly impressed with the professionalism and maturity of all of the student participants.”
