2013 1030 hess robbery

A manhunt was underway in Calverton tonight as Suffolk County Police searched for an armed robber who held up the Hess gas station on Edwards Avenue at exit 71 of the LIE.

A Suffolk County Police helicopter and Suffolk K9 units searched the heavily wooded area.

A white man, approximately six feet tall and wearing a dark hoodie, held up the gas station attendant at gunpoint shortly before 8 p.m. according to police. He was last seen on foot running north on Edwards Avenue, according to radio reports. Police believe he got into a waiting vehicle near Mill Road; the K9 officer had a track that ended abruptly near that location.

The 911 call initially came in to Riverhead Police, who searched the area within the town’s jurisdiction prior to county police arriving on the scene. The gas station is located in Suffolk’s Seventh Precinct very close to the town’s jurisdictional border.

SCPD detectives are investigating.
