Riverhead Police have arrested a man they say held up a downtown Riverhead bank Friday afternoon.

Police have charged Robert J. Santoro, 46, with robbery in the fist degree. Santoro, of Riverhead, whom police described as undomiciled, was arrested at the Budget Host Inn in Riverside, according to a police press release issued early this morning.

2014 0314 bank robbed 2Santoro entered the Capital One Bank branch at 140 E. Main St. at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, handed the teller a written note declaring a robbery, demanding money and threatening the use of a gun, according to the report. Santoro removed an undisclosed amount of money from the teller and fled the area on foot, police said.

Police released bank surveillance camera images of ths suspect at 7:30 p.m. The investigation led to the motel at 30 Lake Avenue in Riverside, where Santoro was arrested without incident, police said.

Santoro was held for arraignment.
