One hundred years of anything is worth a celebration.
That’s why Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter wanted the Riverhead Water District’s 100th anniversary to be “spectacular.”
To commemorate the district’s century of existence, the supervisor, along with Riverhead Sewer District Superintendent Michael Reichel, decided to climb the 140-foot-tall “Tin Man” tower on Pulaski Street — one of the district’s original appurtenances, built in 1915.
“I’m so impressed with what the ‘founding fathers’ of the Riverhead Water District did for this town,” Walter said in an interview before he made the climb.
“I said, ‘We should do something really spectacular,’” Walter said. “I’ve always wanted to climb the tower. So Michael Reichel said, ‘I want to climb it, too!’”
And so they did.
Walter and Reichel reached the catwalk of the tower, but didn’t stop there. They continued to climb until they reached the roof of the tower. They then descended safely back to catwalk where they unfurled the banner that read “Happy 100th Anniversary Riverhead Water District.”
