2014 0805 blue cap

An open letter to the Riverhead High School Class of 2014 from Nancy Reyer, the mother of Michael Hubbard, thanking his classmates for their love and support since his accident in May of their freshman year.

To Riverhead Blue Waves class of 2014,

I am so overwhelmed by your compassion and love for my son Michael Hubbard.

The graduation ceremony was not only joyous but you all have inspired us to be better in helping one another in good times and bad. When Michael was a freshman this terrible tragedy changed our lives but teachers and counselor Craig Korobow made it a point to send love and support. Michael’s fellow classmate Spenser Shea, a miracle himself, brought his family to Stony Brook ICU to tell me how wonderful my son is and — “look at me” — miracles happen. I believed him and here we are; Michael graduated with an honorary diploma.

In my opinion badgeI want to express my thanks for the many friendships of all who have been a blessing to bring a smile to me and my son. We are so blessed with a wonderful superintendent Nancy Carney and principal Charles Regan, who above and beyond tried to make Michael a part of this class any way possible. The inspiration and dedication of class president Carolyn Carrara who made it her mission to have Michael at homecoming and to raise money for his care for three years.

I hold all this in my heart with a smile knowing the love and support. The U.S. military never leaves a man down or behind and you have done just that. Blue Waves, you wave with pride for this Riverhead mom. I’m honored to be a Blue Wave but most of all honored that my son inspired you to show love.

I’m forever grateful to you for your donation and to have Michael’s room at the Brendan House named Riverhead HS class of 2014. I wish you all the miracle of love and life. Enjoy each and every day.

Michael will see you at the 10th reunion and by then he will walk. We have the faith.

God bless you all.

Love,
Nancy Reyer
aka “Michael’s Mom”
