2014 0824 lawnmower races

Riverhead Elks Lodge held its third lawnmower race event of the summer on Sunday.

A large crowd gathered at the lodge for the races, a summer event dating back to 2002.
When a bunch of guys sitting around the lodge looking for something to do came up with the idea back then, no one knew they would become so popular, according to Elks member Tom Grodski.

The participants take the races very seriously, and the souped-up mowers are well-outfitted. Spectators enjoyed burgers and dogs on the grill, with plenty of suds to wash them down.

There were a total of seven races Sunday. David Kollen of Southold won the main event race with a big lead.

There are two more lawnmower racing events planned for the dirt track behind the Elks Lodge: Sept. 14 and Oct. 12.
