Members of the Class of 2027 got a Blue Wave welcome Wednesday from the Riverhead Central Faculty Association.

The teachers union hosted an ice cream social at Riverhead Free Library, where incoming kindergarteners had a chance to meet new classmates and teachers, enjoy story time and coloring books and a sweet treat. They were sent home with The Night Before Kindergarten, a takeoff on the classic Christmas poem all about children preparing for their first big day of school.

RCFA initiated the social event three years ago, said union president Lisa Goulding. It gives children a chance to meet and get to know one another before the big day arrives.

There were separate sessions for each of the district’s four elementary schools. Teacher volunteers met with parents in the library’s meeting room, while students gathered in the activity room for stories, art and and ice cream.

“It’s great community building,” Aquebogue Elementary School principal Phil Kent said.

RCFA vice president Gary Karlson said the event is also an opportunity for teachers “to get that word partnership out there right up front.”

“We don’t want people to think our jobs begin and end in our classrooms,” Karlson said.
