The Riverhead Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) has established itself as one of eleven distinguished units of the Northeast the 2013-2014 school year. The Distinguished Unit designation is earned based on sustained superior performance among the 56 units in Area 4 and points accumulated at drill events throughout the school year.
“Overall we had an extremely well balanced performance in the 2013-14 school year in all areas including Drill, Air Rifle, Academics, Community Service and Leadership Development,” said the Senior Naval Science Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy, USMC (Ret.) “Our senior cadets leaders did a fantastic job last year and kept the unit focused on achieving unit goals and performing well at the Area Manager’s Inspection. The cadets really pulled together and performed up to expectations last year. We are very excited to once again achieve this level of distinction.”
The Distinguished Unit Award gives Riverhead cadets a better chance at having more cadets awarded scholarships to the academies. In the 2013-14 school year, RHS NJROTC Senior Chief (c/SCPO) Nicholas Deschamps received an early appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy (MMA) at Kings Point, NY, where he plans to pursue a degree in engineering.
