Temple Israel of Riverhead will be hosting Rabbi Avinoam Sharon, retired IDF officer, Military Attorney & Current Doctoral Fellow at JTS, who will be discussing current events in Gaza.
Lt. Colonel Avinoam Sharon held senior staff and command positions in the Military Advocate General’s Unit of the Israel Defence Forces. As Military Attorney for Judea, Samaria & Gaza, he was involved in the apprehension and prosecution of terrorists and the related legal and policy issues of counter- terrorism. He also served as liaison to Israel’s General Security Service, the Terrorism and Violent Crime Section of the United States Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and has represented the IDF before a variety of international fact-finding commissions and civil rights organizations, as well as in interviews with the Israeli and foreign press.
Sharon studied linguistics and Semitic languages at Columbia University. He pursued legal studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the IDF School of Military Law, and The Hague Academy of International Law. He earned an M.A. in Talmud and Jewish Law from the Jewish Theological Seminary’s Schechter Institute, and was ordained by the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary in Jerusalem. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary under the supervision of Professor Shamma Friedman.
