Two westbound Long Island Expressway lanes between exits 71 and 70 will be closed beginning tonight and continuing through Friday night, the state Department of Transportation announced in a press release late this afternoon.

The closure will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day. One westbound lane will remain open.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes or they will experience delays, the DOT said.

The night time closures are needed to perform major repairs of the Halsey-Manor Road Bridge over the LIE that was recently hit by a truck, the DOT said. The repairs are needed in order to maintain the structural integrity of the bridge and maintain motorist safety.

As with most road work, this operation is weather-dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these nightly travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance of these closures via electronic message signs.

For real-time travel information motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi .
