Lupton and Luce Insurance in Riverhead held its annual trike-a-thon to benefit cancer research at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Saturday.

About 20 children raised a total of more than $4,000 in sponsorships for the laps they rode in the insurance company’s Howell Avenue parking lot.

The children took home goodie bags filled with lots of gifts and each child who registered to to participate had an opportunity to win a bicycle donated by Cycle Time in Mattituck, said Lupton and Luce agent Mark Patrick of Jamesport.

“It’s a wonderful event,” Patrick said. The company has been hosting the trike-a-thon for the past five or six years, Patrick said.

In addition to participating in the competition, the children learn about bicycle safety, the importance of bike helmets and pedestrian safety. They also get a chance to explore a Riverhead Fire Department engine and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps ambulance rig.

“The kids get the opportunity to sit in the fire truck and ambulance, get familiar with them and learn not to be afraid of a fire truck or ambulance,” Patrick said.
