An elderly man apparently suffering a medical emergency attempted to drive his Honda Accord into the Waldbaum’s supermarket shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday.

“He thought he was driving his electric shopping cart back into the store, but it was his car,” a Riverhead Police officer at the scene said. “He has a stroke and cardiac history. ”

His Honda came to a rest against the doorway of the building, which was not damaged. The man, age 77, was not injured in the mishap. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center for evaluation.  No pedestrians were injured in the accident.
