East End Arts is pleased to announce the artists selected for the special fire hydrant design project in Downtown Riverhead: ALL FIRED UP ON MAIN! “East End Arts is pleased to be working with the Town of Riverhead to employ art towards downtown beautification.” said  East End Arts’ Executive Director, Patricia Snyder.

East End Arts in collaboration with the Town of Riverhead invited artists to submit proposals for the design on ten existing fire hydrants in Downtown Riverhead, located on Main Street between Maple and Griffing avenues, and on Peconic Avenue. Nearly 20 designs were entered into the contest, and only 10 artists were selected to bring their fire hydrant designs to life:

Tana Lee Alves of Water Mill, NY
Bob Castaldi, owner of the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead
Michele Czwartacki of Mt. Sinai, NY
Peter Levine of Patchogue, NY
Drew Lockwood of Greenlawn, NY
Emily Lockwood of Greenlawn, NY
Arlene McLoughlin of Massapequa, NY
Caitlyn Shea of Melville, NY
Joanne Touch of Setauket, NY
Barbara Wooten of Riverhead, NY

Selected designs range from abstract color-scapes to more figurative designs of flora and fauna, patriotic patterns, and more. All submitted designs were reviewed by the committee. For the artists whose designs have been selected, all paint and supplies will be provided as well as a $100 stipend. All painting will be completed by October 10, 2014. An awards ceremony will be held at the Riverhead Country Fair on October 12, 2014, and there will be a “Meet the Artists” Reception at the Riverhead Edgar Allen Poe Festival on October 31, 2014. A brochure will be produced identifying artists and location of their work.

“On behalf of the Riverhead Town Board, I would like to thank Pat Snyder and East End Arts for bringing art to our streetscape. These installations make our downtown more inviting and walkable for residents and visitors alike,” stated Supervisor Sean Walter. “Congratulations to the artists and I look forward to seeing our fire hydrants come to life,” he concluded.

This project is being supported through the generosity of H2M Architects & Engineers and Home Depot.
