A 32-year-old Riverhead man is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail on rape and sexual assault charges involving a minor.

Shawn Foreman was indicted by a Suffolk grand jury Sept. 5 on charges of rape in the second degree, a class D felony, sexual assault in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

Foreman is accused of having sexual intercourse with a child younger than age 15 during August 2013 and of sexual contact without consent of a person younger than age 18. He faces three counts of second-degree rape charges and three counts of third-degree sexual assault, as well as one count of endangering the welfare of a child under the indictment.

Foreman, who was initially arrested Sept. 1, according to online records, was arraigned in Suffolk County Criminal Court on Sept. 11, where he pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $25,000.

Foreman’s defense attorney, Lane Bubka of Riverhead, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Foreman is scheduled to return to county criminal court on Oct. 2.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
