A three-car pileup on East Main Street in Riverhead Friday afternoon sent two people to the hospital and snarled eastbound traffic for about 45 minutes.

A Ford Explorer plowed into the back of a Honda CRV that was stopped for a red light at Elton Street traffic signal, sending the Honda into the rear of an Optimum van. The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m.

Both the woman driving the Ford and the man driving the Honda were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The driver of the van was uninjured. The Ford and Honda were towed from the scene.

The eastbound lane of East Main Street was closed to traffic between Hubbard Avenue and Elton Street for about 45 minutes.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said. No summonses were immediately issued.
