2014_1006_sansimeonSan Simeon By the Sound is proud to announce that Bernie Purcell, who works in the Dietary Department, has been named October Employee of the Month.

Bernie was born in Greenport, where he lives today with his family.

In his 25 years of dedicated service to San Simeon, Bernie has always been “the quintessential fun-loving Irishman,” say his co-workers.

In his free time, Bernie, an active firefighter for 37 years in the Greenport Fire Department, enjoys volunteering for firematic and community events. “Ever since I was a young boy, I have been around the firehouse,” Bernie confesses. “My whole family is involved in the fire service.” In a sad turn of events, Bernie’s brother, Keith, passed away 13 years ago on active duty. “Although the fire service can be dangerous,” Bernie, a member of the Fallen Firefighters Foundation, admits “my dream always was, and always will be, to be a city firefighter.”

“I am a big kid and that is what keeps me young at heart,” Bernie grins. His sage advice for all young people is “don’t take life too seriously otherwise you won’t get out alive!”
