Riverhead Police detectives are seeking the public’s help in their investigation into an assault that took place on Zion Street in Aquebogue last night.

Police responding to several 911 calls about several men assaulting another man in the road found the injured victim lying on the ground in the roadway at about 7:30 p.m., according to a police press release. His assailants had already fled the scene, police said.

Police identified the victim as Willie Jones, age 50. Jones was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment. He was subsequently transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital “due to the extent of his injuries,” according to the police report.
