Tragedy struck in the Long Island Sound on Tuesday night as a local spear fisherman was found dead.

According to Southold Town police, Carl Joseph Czajkowski, 66, of South Jamesport was found near the end of Duck Point Road in Cutchogue on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Southold Police said they received a report of an overdue scuba diver who was spearfishing in the Long Island Sound. As a result of a search in that area with the assistance of Cutchogue Fire Department, Southold bay constables and police, Czajkowski was located in the water and found to have died, police said.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office was notified, responded and assisted with the investigation. The cause of death is under investigation, but is not believed to be suspicious, police said.
