One man was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries following a single-car accident on County Road 51 in Riverside.

A northbound Toyota Prius overturned in the median in front of the county center complex at about 12:50 p.m. today. Its driver and sole occupant was transported to PBMC by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which was called on mutual aid to Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance.

Police called Riverhead Fire Department for a heavy rescue unit and to secure a landing zone for a Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter, which was put on standby but not called.

RFD volunteers stabilized and righted the vehicle, which had come to rest on its side in the median with the engine still running. The southbound lanes of CR 51 were temporarily closed to traffic while emergency crews and volunteer firefighters worked to clear the crash scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
