The Edgar Allan Poe Festival continues today in downtown Riverhead with a host of family-friendly — and mostly indoor — activities along Main Street, though the fireworks show scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to inclement weather.
From a “Bats, Barnacles & Broomsticks Party” at the L.I. Aquarium, to a “haunted house” at the L.I. Science Center, special exhibits at the Suffolk County Historical Society, pumpkin carving at East End Arts, and readings of ghost stories and Poe classics in businesses up and down Main Street, day two of the Poe fest has lots to offer visitors of all ages. The status of free hay rides along the Peconic Riverfront, scheduled for 12 to 3 p.m. today, was unknown as of 11:15 a.m., according to BID Management Association president Raymond Pickersgill.
Yesterday’s trick-or-treating on Main Street and the parade that followed was a great success, Pickersgill said.
“It was absolutely amazing to see that many people out on kind of a dreary Halloween night,” Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter said today. “Yesterday, on my way back to Town Hall driving down Main Street, seeing all those children in their costumes trick or treating, it made me so giddy. It was really cool. I look forward to the rest of the festival,” Walter said.
Everything went off without a hitch, he said. “It was a nice family event and a smashing success.”
