The Riverhead Combined Veterans Committee held its annual Veterans Day ceremonies this morning at the World War I Memorial on West Main Street, where members of the Riverhead American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts laid wreaths before the granite monument bearing a brass plaque inscribed with the names of the Riverhead men who served in the “war to end all wars,” including the nine local men “who made the supreme sacrifice” in the war.

Councilman John Dunleavy, a Navy veteran who served as a plane captain aboard the U.S.S. Essex in the Mediterranean from 1958 to 1962, addressed the crowd, reminding them to thank veterans for their service and to make sure they reach into their pockets to help out homeless vets, especially during the winter season.

Supervisor Sean Walter and the Riverhead Town Board presented the commanders of the Riverhead VFW and American Legion posts with proclamations.

Judi Hettrick, of Riverhead, sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and Riverhead High School students Lauren Schmitt, of Riverhead, and Danny Jones, of Wading River, played taps at the conclusion of ceremonies.
