A taxi cab driver was taken to the hospital this afternoon after a two-car accident on West Main Street just before 3 p.m..
A a Toyota Prius operated by Town Taxi was eastbound on West Main Street when another eastbound vehicle attempted to pass the taxi on the shoulder, according to a police officer at the scene. The two vehicles collided and the taxi cab left the roadway, struck a utility pole and then crashed into a chain-link fence adjacent to the Greenview Motel. The fence stopped the taxi just shy of the cement block wall of the motel.
Riverhead Fire Department Heavy Rescue responded to remove the driver’s side door of the taxi so that Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMTs could pull the driver from the cab. He was transported by RVAC to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver and a passenger in the second vehicle were not injured.
No summonses were issued, but the accident remains under investigation, police said.
