Wind Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for strong winds developing across Suffolk County this morning.

South winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph may bring down limbs, vulnerable trees and power lines, the weather service said in the advisory, issued 3:55 a.m.

The wind advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m.

Hazardous Weather Outlook

Statement from the National Weather Service in New York, 5:14 a.m.: A coastal storm is expected to affect the region Wednesday into Wednesday night. Uncertainty still exists in how close to the region this storm will track. A combination of snow, rain and wind are likely with this system.

Although it is too early to determine exact snow and rain amounts there is a low probability of 6 or more inches of snow with this system for all but the twin forks of Long Island. Continue to monitor NWS forecasts for the latest on potential storm-related hazards and impacts during the busy midweek holiday travel period.

Gale Warning

A gale warning has been posted for eastern Long Island Sound and Peconic and Gardiners Bays for winds of 20 to 25 kt and gusts up to 40 kt. Seas of 3 to 5 feet on the Sound and waves on 2 to 3 feet on the bays. The gale warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening.

Today Rain…mainly this morning. Windy with highs in the mid 60s. South winds 20 to 25 mph. Gusts up to 50 mph…decreasing to 40 mph this afternoon. Chance of rain near 100 percent.

Tonight Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain in the evening…then partly cloudy after midnight. Breezy with lows around 50. Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Tuesday Mostly sunny and breezy. Highs in the mid 50s. West winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Tuesday Night Partly cloudy in the evening…then mostly cloudy with a chance of rain after midnight. Cooler with lows in the mid 30s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Wednesday Rain. Highs in the lower 40s. North winds 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 25 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 90 percent.

Wednesday Night Rain with snow likely. Little or no snow accumulation. Windy with lows in the lower 30s. Chance of precipitation 90 percent.
