A group of Riverhead Central School District teachers participated in the Polar Plunge last weekend, raising $5,000 for the Special Olympics.
The team was organized by Gary Karlson, an elementary teacher at Roanoke Avenue Elementary and 2nd Vice President of the Riverhead Central Faculty Association.
The team, made up of RCSD teachers David Spinella, Kathleen Horn, Chuck Kitz, Kelly Dillon and Roy Buccola, participated in the Polar Plunge Special Olympics Fundraiser on Saturday, Novemember 22, at Cedar Beach in Mount Siani.
The teachers, sponsored by their friends and families, plunged into the chilly waters of the Long Island Sound to raise $5,000 for the Special Olympics.
The money will go towards training and competition for athletes, who participate in the Special Olympics free of charge. The full cost for training and competition for each athlete is $400; the RCSD group raised enough to sponsor 12 athletes this year.
