The Riverhead Lions Club welcomed Santa Claus to town Sunday with a big parade down Main Street and the chance for children of all ages to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus on the stage of the town showmobile.
Led by the a color guard unit of the Riverhead Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts, elected officials, the Riverhead High School NJROTC, and Little Flower School drummers, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and dancers marched before the waving adults and children who lined the street for the 1 o’clock parade. Antique cars and tractors filed behind the marchers, followed by gleaming fire trucks and ambulances and giant snow removal equipment from the Riverhead highway department.
Wide-eyed children craned their necks for their first peek at Santa, who rode into town standing in the back seat of a Toyota convertible.
The parade procession began at Court Street and made its way east to McDermott Avenue, then south to Heidi Behr Way along the riverfront to the showmobile, where Supervisor Sean Walter presented Santa with the key to the Town of Riverhead.
Children formed a long line in front of the showmobile to wait for their own private audience with jolly old St. Nick. Mrs. Claus assisted with the occasional frightened tot and helped Santa hand out goodies. See photos of children visiting with Santa here.
