The worst of the storm is over according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
Expect lingering light rain and drizzle this afternoon and throughout the evening, with gray skies and occasional showers right through Friday, NWS meteorologist David Stark said this afternoon. The weather system that produced two to three inches of rain across our area today will “just meander around and stay put,” Stark said, though it deposit any more heavy rainfall.
Wind gusts today topped out at 48 mph, Stark said. It will remain breezy for the remainder of the day and tonight, he said. Temperatures tonight will hold steady at about where they are right now, cooling only a couple of degrees if that, he said.
Downpours flooded local roadways and caused minor coastal flooding in Riverhead, officials said.
“We got a lot of rain. There’s a lot of ponding on the roads,” Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said. “Drive slowly.”
Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson said overall the town fared well. A few roads are flooded, he said, naming Creek Road in Wading River, Hulse Landing Road between Sound Avenue and Route 25A, Sound Avenue east of Hulse Landing and Fresh Pond between Sound Avenue and the trailer park, Woodson said.
“Everything else, from what I’m hearing, is passable,” he said.
Both Woodson and Hegermiller said the storm didn’t take down any trees or power lines in Riverhead.
PSEG-Long Island reported scattered power outages throughout the day, including one on Sound Shore Road in Northville and two in Riverside and one in Flanders. The outage in Northville has been resolved and the customers without power in Riverside and Flanders, which PSEG numbers at fewer than 40, will see service restored this evening, according to the utility.
