It was announced at the December 9, 2014 Board of Education meeting that Riverhead High School social studies teacher Patrick Burke has been chosen to be the new Assistant Principal at the High School. Burke will replace Michael Hugelmeyer, who was previously named the Director of Professional Development. Mr. Burke recently completed the School District Leadership (SDL) and School Building Leadership (SBL) graduate program at Stony Brook University.

T2014_1211_headshothis fall Burke received first place for his research and development of a creative program on teacher-based “effective” professional development: Reciprocal Peer Teaching (RPT). RPT was created by Burke as an effective way to ensure quality teacher professional development that will ultimately lead to a more effective classroom for both the teacher and the students.

Burke notes in his abstract on RPT, “Peer teaching, more importantly Reciprocal Peer Teaching (RPT), along with effective mentoring, has been proven to be a successful tool that is a cost effective, proactive approach to attaining overall academic achievement. It is an approach that is formulated around relationships and rooted in self-analysis, observation, and non- evaluative reciprocal feedback. This is a confidential process of professionals working together to reflect, expand, refine, and build new pedagogical practices to transfer learning in the realm of professional development and other teacher training opportunities.”
