Many mornings I wake up, walk outside to get the newspaper only to find out that I cannot bear to read it. This morning was one of those mornings. It is difficult to comprehend what is happening in New York let all over the world. Is peace on earth and goodwill towards man just another cliché? I know it is not and I know New York will get through this most difficult time, but is still horrifying to read about the execution-style slayings of New York City Police Officers Wen Jian Liu and Rafael Ramos. I find myself asking, “What can I do to help?” and “How can Riverhead help?”
I write this today as an open letter to both the residents of Riverhead and to the men and women of the Riverhead Police Department, one of the finest law enforcement agencies in our entire nation. The Riverhead Police Department is comprised of our neighbors and for the most part they live right here in town but that is not what makes them special. What makes them special is their attention to detail. Whether it is investigating gang violence on the east end or helping a resident cross Main Street they are always there they are always placing their best foot forward.
I have often said the Riverhead Police officers are the unofficial ambassadors of the town board. They often see people at the darkest times in their lives and how they help people through those times is a direct reflection of this town. It is gratifying to know that without exception our police department out-performs itself each and every time it is tested.
So why write this letter? I am not saying anything that the residents don’t already know. One of the most difficult and humbling responsibilities I have as town supervisor is the duty to keep the residents and employees of this great town safe. That task is always made easier by the men and women of the police department. My fear today is this; how can I or the police department protect themselves from pure evil such as we witnessed yesterday in New York City? Our officers can remain ever vigilant but that may not always be enough. We need help from everyone. “If you see something say something.” In this post-9/11 world this phrase means something.
My prayer today is that the members of the Riverhead Police Department remain safe and that the residents of this great town rise up and help in that responsibility. The information you provide may seem inconsequential to you but it could alter history and ultimately everyone’s safety. So please help, keep you eyes and ears open for we all must remain vigilant. If you see something please let the police know.
Hopefully, you don’t see anything. In that case a simple hello and thank you to the men and women of the Riverhead Police Department will suffice. Please take the time out today to pray for the families of officers Liu and Ramos. May God’s peace be with everyone this holiday season.
Sean Walter
Riverhead Town Supervisor
