Riverhead Rotary, with the assistance of Riverhead High School NJROTC cadets, distributed a couple hundred bushel baskets containing turkey dinners with all the trimmings on Friday.

The holiday food baskets were given to needy families screened by local church groups.

Some of the provisions were donated to Riverhead Rotary by area businesses, such as King Kullen and Entenmann’s Bakery, while others were purchased by the Rotary club with cash donations from Rotarians and community members.

The club’s holiday food basket donation effort is a longstanding tradition. It also conducts a holiday gift drive for local families referred by school social workers, with members shopping for specific families in need.

“We want to do whatever we can to help make sure families who are struggling can provide a happy holiday for their children in these tough economic times,” said Riverhead Rotary secretary Beth Hanlon, who coordinates the holiday gift campaign for the club.
