A Holbrook man faces criminal mischief and weapons charges after firing a gun inside a room at the Hyatt Place hotel on East Main Street Christmas morning.

Riverhead Police said they were called to the hotel at 10:45 a.m. yesterday. Officers determined that Neal Shupak, 58, discharged a loaded firearm inside a hotel room, damaging the room.

Shupak was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and prohibited use of a firearm, police said.

Correction:  This story has been amened to reflect the correct spelling of the defendant’s surname, which was misspelled in the police press release.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
