Longtime Riverhead Planning Board member Lyle Wells was replaced yesterday by the Riverhead Town Board.

Wells’ term had expired.

Wells said he was surprised by the news when contacted by a reporter.

“I had no idea,” he said. “That’s just great.”

Supervisor Sean Walter said Wells did not reapply for the post. “We made everybody reapply. We conducted interviews. Lyle didn’t reapply. I don’t know why he wouldn’t know about it.”

Board members appointed Riverhead business owner George Nunnaro.

“He was one of the finalists when we appointed Stan Carey last year,” Walter said.

Nunnaro owns Prest-O-Peconic , a welding supply business on West Main Street, Walter said.
