The most vulnerable on the East End, the area’s growing homeless population, will be sheltered during the massive blizzard scheduled to slam the area tonight.

Tracey Lutz, executive director of Maureen’s Haven, a program that provides shelter for the homeless at area houses of worship, said tonight, all homeless guests are going to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aquebogue.

“Volunteers will bring dinner and we have staff that are staying overnight,” she said. “We plan to be there through Tuesday night if the buses aren’t able to operate. If the buses begin operating at any point on Tuesday, the guests will move on to St. Agnes, run by John’s Place volunteers, in Greenport.”

Maureen’s Haven, which operates under the auspices of Peconic Community Council in Riverhead, has scores of volunteers in houses of worship across the East End who provide the homeless with a warm place to sleep and dinner, as well as a packed lunch, from November through April.
