Riverhead Highway crews are conducting major snow removal operations downtown today.
Police have closed East Main Street between Roanoke Avenue and McDermott Avenue this morning to allow highway crews to remove snow piled in the gutters by plows. Crews are using payloaders to put snow in dump trucks to be hauled off.
Main Street will be closed “a good part of the day” for the work, Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson said this morning.
Highway crews are also removing snow from Pulaski Street in Polish Town this morning. Sections of Pulaski Street is closed for that project as well. That won’t take as long as Main Street, Woodson said. Crews will then move on to clean up Osborn Avenue and, if time allows, Railroad Street too, he said.
The area could get hit with as much as 4 four to 10 inches of snow Monday, according to the National Weather Service, depending on the track of storm forecast to move up the coast and affect Long Island Monday afternoon to Monday night.
