Riverhead varsity cheerleaders are tearing it up at the nationals this year.

The team has made the competition’s semifinals for the first time in program history, according to its Facebook page.

The Waves are seventh out of the top 16 semifinalists going into tonight’s semifinal rounds of the National High School Cheerleading Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando. The Waves perform tonight at 7:12 p.m. The competition semifinal will be live streamed and is available for viewing on the organization’s website. (There is a $24.99 fee to view the livestream of tonight’s event.)

Riverhead’s 17-girl squad is coached by Stephanie Piraino and Toni Venza. Sam Cila is their strength coach. They traveled to Orlando with more than 40 parents and supporters.

“You know the Blue Waves are in the house,” said Teri Davis, mother of cheerleader Lexi Davis.
