A 21-year-old Riverhead man was charged with second-degree assault today following a domestic dispute, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release.

Police said Nicholas Sokol stabbed his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend during a domestic dispute today. Her injuries were not life-threatening, police said. She gave police a description of Sokol and he was arrested at the Doctor’s Path apartments this afternoon as he was exiting a taxi.

Sokol fled from police and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit, police said.

He was processed at Riverhead Police headquarters, where he was charged with assault in the second degree, according to the report. He was arraigned in Riverhead Justice Court and remanded to Suffolk County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
