Hundreds packed out the Riverhead High School Charles Cardona Auditorium last night to celebrate black history with student performances and presentations.

This year’s annual Black History Month Celebration featured song, dance and poetry readings from all four of the district’s elementary schools, the middle school and the high school.

The Rev. Mary Cooper from the House of Praise in Riverhead began the event with an impassioned invocation, in which she gave thanks for the variety of artistic and cultural accomplishments of the nation’s black community.

“You have brought us through many years of difficulties and trials,” she said in her prayer. “We thank you that we have a time now when we can come together as our people and rejoice and enjoy each other.”

The RHS Council for Unity also presented the RHS Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian award to Riverhead Middle School teacher and coach Salvatore Loverde and to community leader Robert “Bubbie” Brown.
