Riverhead volunteer firefighters made a quick stop of a kitchen fire at Sabor Latino restaurant in DMV plaza this morning.
Black smoke was billowing from the restaurant’s roof when firefighters were called on the report of a structure fire just before 10 a.m.
The fire started on a kitchen stove, Third Assistant Chief Tim Corwin said. He knocked most of it down with a hand-held water can, then firefighters finished it off with a booster line, First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said.
There was no structural damage to the building, but kitchen appliances were damaged in the fire, Corwin said.
The restaurant will be closed until the appliances are repaired or replaced and the county health department authorizes it to reopen, Riverhead Fire Marshal David Andruskiewicz said.
The adjacent motor vehicles department, check-cashing and insurance offices as well as a liquor store in the plaza were briefly evacuated.
Riverhead Fire Department responded with two engines, a ladder truck and fire police patrol units, Brooks said. About 50 volunteers answered the call.
