Suffolk County’s leading center for orthopedic care has added an expert in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and related conditions that can cause joint pain and loss of mobility.

Fellowship-trained in Rheumatology and board-certified in both Rheumatology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Jenny Cabas-Vargas has been appointed Director of Rheumatology and Immunology at Riverhead’s Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and the PBMC Health continuum. Dr. Cabas specializes in advanced treatment for inflammatory and degenerative arthritis, lupus, gout and other autoimmune diseases and joint-pain conditions. She joins the team of PBMC Health’s Krauss Musculoskeletal Institute (KMI), expanding its already comprehensive range of orthopedic services.

“Dr. Cabas is an exceptional talent in this field,” said Dr. Richard Kubiak, PBMC’s Chief Medical Officer. “Her research on autoimmune conditions has already been a significant contribution, and her expertise truly adds to the comprehensive nature of our continuum of care.”

“Arthritis and autoimmune conditions, such as lupus, are a growing problem for our population base, and Dr. Cabas is one of the area’s leading experts,” said Andrew J. Mitchell, FACHE, President and CEO of Peconic Bay Medical Center and the entire PBMC Health continuum of care. “By adding Dr. Cabas to our team at PBMC Health’s KMI, we are following through on our promise to create a comprehensive center for orthopedic services that will benefit all of Suffolk County.”

Dr. Cabas received her residency training in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, with a Rheumatology elective at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York Presbyterian Hospital. She served her Rheumatology Fellowship at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Her publications and presentations include peer-reviewed studies of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), pain-relief therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, and optimal approaches for autoimmune condition diagnoses. Prior to coming to Peconic Bay Medical Center, Dr. Cabas was a staff Rheumatologist at the Institute for Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases for the Atlantic Health System, Summit, NJ.

Fluent in Spanish and English, Dr. Cabas is accepting new patients and is available for consultations. Her offices are located at: 496 Route 111, Manorville, NY (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday), and 64 Commerce Drive, Riverhead, NY (Monday and Thursday).
