A motorcyclist was killed after hitting a pothole on Reeves Avenue and losing control of his bike Monday afternoon, police said in a press release issued last night.

Police said David I. Decarle, 37, of Riverhead was found lying injured in the roadway when police responded to a report by a passing motorist who came upon the accident just before 4:30 p.m. Decarle was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center wehere he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Police said Decarle’s bike was found lying in the eastbound lane of the roadway.  An investigation determined that Decarle was heading east at the time of the accident, which took place about 2,200 feet west of Doctors Path, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the accident is requested to contact the Riverhead Police Department at (631)727-4500.
