An African children’s choir will perform in Riverhead this April during its nationwide tour across the U.S.

The Amana Children’s Choir, a group of 20 students from the Light Africa Academy in Uganda, will make a stop at the Calvary Baptist Church on Riverleigh Avenue on Sunday, April 12.

The performance is part of the choir’s six month long Joyful Africa Tour, which has spanned from California to Texas to Long Island. A similar tour in 2008 funded the construction of a “sibling home” for orphans back in Uganda, where elder siblings are able to care for their younger siblings in a safe environment.

With this tour, the choir hopes to raise enough money to build a home for girls on Light Africa Academy’s campus. According to the choir’s website, “Traveling on foot often two or more miles to school is very dangerous in Uganda. This home could potentially save these girls’ lives.”

The performance will be held at 7 p.m. at the church on April 12. The concert is free, though there will be a collection available for optional donations to the choir.

The choir also welcomes donations of the following items for the tour:

  • New or gently used suitcases and duffle bags
  • Junior size 2 to Women’s size 10 jeans
  • Gift cards to purchase school shoes to take back to Uganda
  • Small U.S.-related gift items for the children to take back to Uganda
  • Monogramming for travel uniforms (the children are growing out of theirs)
