As winter holds spring hostage here on the North Fork, many of us are patiently awaiting the arrival of scup, striped bass and fluke. With no fishing opportunities on Peconic Bay or Long Island Sound until at least April, I am focusing my reports to our south in Moriches where there is some quality fishing to be had.

Out of Moriches inlet, Captain Steve from the Fish On Fleet was reporting some very cold surface water temperatures. As a result, all of his inshore spots were not holding fish. This caused the captain to fish very deep for a steady pick of cod, pollack and ling.

Captain Joe from the King Cod fleet reports cold water temps have driven him out into the deep, as well. Fishing 30 to 40 miles southeast of Moriches Inlet in 200 plus feet of water, he is finding codfish and some “Jurassic Park” sized ling. So don’t wait for the bass on April 15, get out for some tasty local cod right now!
