Former Riverhead police officer Tim Hubbard is not a candidate for town supervisor.

A March 12 announcement by Riverhead Democrats indicating Hubbard was seeking the Democrats’ nomination for either councilman or supervisor was erroneous, Riverhead Democratic Committee chairwoman Marjorie Acevedo acknowledged Sunday.

“It was a mistake, a misunderstanding,” Acevedo said.

Hubbard told RiverheadLOCAL on Friday he never sought the supervisor nomination.

“I was asked to screen for it but I said no,” Hubbard said. The former Riverhead police detective, who retired from the force in December after more than 32 years, said he’s seeking the nomination for councilman only. “I have no idea how that happened,” Hubbard said of the Democrats’ announcement in the form of an email from Democratic committeeman John Stefans, who is heading up the party’s screening committee.

Hubbard, 54, who is not enrolled in any political party, said he also asked to be screened for a council seat by the Republican party. The terms of two Republican incumbents, James Wooten and George Gabrielsen, expire this year. Both are seeking re-election.

Stefans’ announcement of candidates screening with the Democrats also listed Anthony Coates and Gregory Fischer as seeking the Democratic nomination for supervisor.  Both have acknowledged they are or will be screening with the party committee for that position. Fischer has also indicated an interest in running for council or assessor.

Acevedo said the screening process has just begun and the party is still recruiting possible candidates.
