A fire in the heating unit on the roof of the Kmart store on Route 58 filled the store with smoke this morning, forcing the store’s evacuation while Riverhead firefighters investigated.

The call for a structure fire at the store, located at the corner of Route 58 and Oliver Street came in at about 7:45 a.m. and was answered by about 40 volunteer firefighters.

“There was quite a bit of smoke inside the building, but no fire and no damage,” First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said.

Two roof teams worked to isolate the source of the smoke to one of the heating units on the north side of the building, Brooks said.

The department responded with two engines, a ladder truck and a fire police support vehicle, he said.

The incident was turned over to the Riverhead fire marshal for followup, Brooks said.
