A four-car crash on Flanders Road sent two people to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries Wednesday afternoon.

Southampton Town police at the scene said the cause of the crash was under investigation. It appeared that a rear-end collision in the westbound lane of travel just east of the intersection of Flanders Road and County Road 105 led to at least one vehicle crashing into an eastbound car.

An elderly woman driver of a westbound white Subaru XV Crosstrek, which sustained significant front-end damage, was taken to the hospital, according to police.

The driver of a westbound Ford Explorer, which came to a rest after the crash on the sidewalk on the eastbound side of the road, was also taken to the hospital, police said.

Neither sustained serious injuries, according to police.

The driver and passenger in the eastbound Dodge Neon, which collided with the Explorer, were not injured in the accident, police said.

Those three vehicles were towed from the scene. A fourth vehicle did not sustain damage requiring a tow, police said. Its driver also escaped injury and was able to drive away.

The accident occurred at about 2:10 p.m.

Flanders-Northampton Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, responding to a mutual aid request from Flanders, transported the victims to PBMC. Flanders Fire Department responded to clean up the fluid spilled on the roadway.

Eastbound traffic was diverted at Route 105 while the accident scene was cleared.

A canine passenger in the Subaru, whose driver was transported to PBMC, was uninjured and taken by police for safekeeping until the driver or someone on her behalf could pick the dog up.
